Suryakumar Yadav: India vs Pakistan T20 Clash ‘Much More Than Just a Game’
India captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged on Saturday that Sunday’s T20 World Cup showdown against Pakistan cannot simply be treated as “just another game,” no matter how much the team tries to prepare.
“It’s a big platform, obviously,” Suryakumar told reporters in Colombo, the host city for the high-stakes Group A encounter. “No matter how much you say that it’s just another game, it is a big game.”
The R Premadasa Stadium, with a 35,000-seat capacity, has been sold out for the clash, while hundreds of millions of cricket fans around the world are expected to tune in on television, underscoring the global fascination with this historic rivalry. The match was only confirmed late Monday night after the Sri Lankan government lifted its earlier decision to boycott the blockbuster game.
“We don’t play them often, and we don’t meet regularly,” Suryakumar said of Pakistan. “But at the end of the day, we try to keep things simple and focus on executing our best game. There is pressure, yes, but it is also a massive opportunity. When you play an India-Pakistan match, it’s more about the occasion.”
The Indian captain declined to reveal whether his players would shake hands with the Pakistan team, following three tense Asia Cup meetings in Dubai last year where gestures of sportsmanship were largely absent. “I will break the suspense tomorrow. Wait for 24 hours—let us focus on playing the game, which is the most important thing,” he added.
India enters the clash on the back of two convincing wins in Group A. They edged past the United States by 29 runs in their opening match in Mumbai before thrashing Namibia by 93 runs in Delhi.
Suryakumar also addressed the challenge posed by Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq, known for his unconventional sling-arm action with a notable pause in his delivery stride. “We have practised against similar types of bowlers and actions, so we will stick to what we’ve been practising in our night sessions,” he said confidently.
Meanwhile, India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma, who had been sidelined with a stomach bug, has recovered and is expected to feature in the playing XI.
Both India and Pakistan are unbeaten in their opening two Group A matches. The winner of Sunday’s clash will secure a place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup, intensifying the stakes even further for this iconic rivalry.
